The meaning of work - a Christian perspective

11 June 1995 | Faith & Society Management

Can the Book of Genesis illuminate the meaning of work today? Or the labours of a black woman carrying pails of stones in Arkansas in 1903?Invited to preach at Holy Trinity church in Dartford on their patronal festival in 1995, Douglas suggests 'yes'. Work is defined as whatever we do, paid or unpaid, on which others rely. The talk makes Douglas' own career shift more than twelve years later into advising on radical career change seem unsurprising. It also points to the necessity of conflict and challenge as part of healthy creation - which fifteen years later emerges as a theme when Douglas considers the global financial crisis in the light of his management studies.
