By 9 August, the effects of the first atomic bomb dropped at Hiroshima on 6 August 1945 were already apparent.
The visibility over the city was extremely poor. Moments after 11am local time the aircraft ‘Boxcar’ was down to its last two or three minutes of fuel before having to return to base. Suddenly the clouds opened up and Major Sweeney saw the huge Nagasaki Mitsubishi arsenal plant. While the atomic bomb fell through about eight kilometres of sky to detonate about half a kilometre above the ground, there would have been about a minute of silence.
In one minute of silence, we make our own cry to God our Father.
