Reference checking in senior appointments: lessons from the Charity Commission saga

Before Martin Thomas could take up his appointment as chair of the Charity Commission, he abruptly resigned when complaints came to light from his time with a previous charity. The appointing government department has a policy of not taking references. I explore the issues here.
