12 September 2022 | Faith & Society

This talk was given at St Bride's Church, Liverpool on 12 September 2022, followed by responses from the Very Rev'd Dr Sue Jones, Dean of Liverpool, and Rev'd Martin Henwood, Vicar of Dartford, and an animated discussion with those present. It develops in a Christian theological context ideas presented within a secular framework in the essay 'Understanding power safely', uploaded to this site on 11 August 2022 (separate free download). Both the essay and the talk build on ideas in the book 'Elites: can you rise to the top without losing your soul?' (Eye Books, 2021). This talk suggests that, if we can survive the climate emergency (a huge if), those born today will grow up into a more accountable, ethically aware and power-literate world in the 2040s, and outlines two ways in which this might happen.
